jk rowling making nagini an asian woman in canon is really sending me. you made this asian lady the pet of a nazi inspired character and then had her beheaded by some cracker boy i-
1. the EW article is a depressing example of BUT WE PUT REPRESENTATION IN, RIGHT??
Kim says Nagini is far from the villain one might expect from a character who, after all, eventually kills Severus Snape. “It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini,” Kim tells EW. “You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”
… her “mysterious blood curse” that turns her into a snake being, presumably, another humanizing aspect of this character who will end up being treated equal to literal cursed objects in canon. Prseumably we’re also ignoring how “it’s in your blood” tropes themselves support pseudoscientific and often racist theories of how the world works.
2. the levels of Orientalism which allow without comment the appropriation of the name “Nagini” from Hindu tradition to name a pet of an evil English wizard and then the selection of a Korean actress to play this character as a human
3. like the antisemetic tropes already present in “evil people keep company with snakes!!1” weren’t enough already, JKR?
I kept saying this franchise was going to hell in a handbasket, but noooo, y’all didn’t want to listen
